Guardian Early Learning Centre Gungahlin

The Peppermint Room were engaged to design a 64 place early childhood centre on the first and second floors of a mixed used commercial development that housed a car wash facility and mechanic workshop on the ground floor. This multi-level facility with the outdoor play spaces on the balconies was the first of its kind for Canberra.

During the design phase we worked extensively with ACT childcare regulators to meet all legislated requirements and concerns. Part of this included calculating the required internal and external square meterage to inform the child place yield.  It also included producing sun diagrams to demonstrate sufficient light penetration to the internal play spaces.

The centre is finished in fresh, light colours with feature timber for texture. The reception, waiting and director’s office greet you on the first floor with staff services spread in convenient locations over the two levels. Each level consists of two play spaces, connected by age appropriate children’s amenities with development-specific kitchenettes and craft benches in each play space.
